2004: July-August 2004
Associated attachment gives details on traditional Seisiún shows which will be starting in your area next week and will continue on throughout the months of July and August. These shows offer locals and visitors alike authentic traditional entertainment in its natural habitat.
All shows are structured into formal and informal parts. The formal part allows the audience to experience all aspects of the tradition including music on the various traditional instruments, step dancing and singing both in Irish and English. Many also include storytelling and recitations. Generally this will be followed by light refreshments before the informal part begins. This last part allows the audience to participate in some of the local dances as basic tuition is given in the simpler ceili dances (Siege of Ennis, Walls of Limerick, etc.) and sometimes also contribute items of their own; the informal part can often be the highlight of the night for some of the visitors from abroad.
All Seisiún shows reflect the tradition in their own particular areas so that virtually no two are alike; many people therefore take the opportunity to attend a number of shows in different localities throughout the Summer.
To sum up the appeal of Seisiún anyone involved will tell you of the numerous times they've heard visitors commenting to the effect that "this is the first real Irish entertainment they've encountered during their holiday" or that their reason for holidaying in Ireland was to experience authentic Irish entertainment at first hand.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could help audiences find the various Seisiún venues by covering this on your local radio traditional programmes or in the local press as appropriate. I'm sure the local Seisiún group in your area would be only too happy to come in and discuss their plans with you if given the opportunity or, in the case of radio, maybe even provide you with a sample of some items from their show on air!
