Art Exhibition by Maria Hamilton
2nd July to 24th July, 2005 at theVandeleur Walled Garden, Kilrush, Co Clare.

A field of swaying rushes dead-ends at a turf-bank. The sky is greyish blue. Below the bank a luminous magic: bog cotton glowing with a fierce angelic light.

Maria Hamilton has established herself as one of the most original interpreters of the West Clare landscape, most rooted in its muck and salt, her eye alive to the smallest vibrations of colour and shadings of form. Working away quietly at her studio in Moyasta she has put together a vibrant, impressive, deliciously coloured body of work for her much anticipated exhibition at the Vandeleur Walled Garden this Summer.

It has been four years since her last sell-out exhibition and this one sees a further maturing of her individual style. Her stunning treatment of everyday scenes – from bogholes and meadows to rushes and wild flowers – are visually arresting and delicately detailed. They capture that wildness and short-lived beauty which passes over the bogs and fields and cliffs of the peninsula.

Her continued interest in the expressive grace of the human form is also explored and developed in this show: dancers frozen in a split-second of pure concentrated shape; dark forms that seem to droop in anguish or spiritual poverty, barely suspended by the warm colours of hope - these stand in stark contrast to brighter pastels of a lounging figure or a pensive lady.

Meadowsweet, Tufted vetch, Ragged-Robin, Waterlilies – there is a visual feast here for any tired eye, a celebration really of the wonders that pass through the West Clare Peninsula almost unnoticed.

The exhibition is open from Saturday 2^nd July to Sunday 24th July at the Vandeleur Walled Garden, Kilrush, Co Clare. Official opening is on Saturday 9th July at 8pm by Dr Simon Berrow of the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation, along with a cheese and wine reception. All are welcome.
