Preservation

Due to the vulnerability of archival material, strict environmental controls and preservation policies are applied to the management, care, and conservation of archives. Environmentally controlled storage facilities ensure that our collections do not suffer any deterioration from light, airborne dust, pollution, and atmospheric heat or cold. This duty of care continues through to the reading room where public access to archival material is provided in a controlled and secure environment.

Collections that are acquired by the archives are cleaned, arranged, and catalogued according to universal descriptive standards. Material is then stored in archival quality packing materials, these materials are acid-free and are treated in order to provide a positive environment for the long-term preservation of documents. Researchers consulting material in the research room must adhere to specific rules for researchers ensuring that archives are not mishandled or interfered with.
