Bayonet and Scabbard

On 18th December 2005, while conducting a search of the Vandeuler Wood, Kilrush Gardaí made the chance find of this bayonet and holster, both of which are in excellent condition. It is Wilkinson bayonet and carried the serial number 510077 on the blade. This was the standard issue bayonet of the British Army during the First World War and a hole in the handle indicates that it was manufactured in about the Spring of 1916. The bayonet was not connected to any crime, and remained in the evidence room of Kilrush Garda station until it was donated to Clare Museum in May, 2014.
