Autograph book from Frongoch

Autograph books were a form of social media in times past, and this is a page from the autograph book of Patrick Brennan, of Meelick in County Clare. Brennan was a known republican and was rounded up in the aftermath of the 1916 Easter Rising and interned in Frongoch in north Wales. The autograph book was in his possession and it was signed by internees, some of whom went on to become important players in the upcoming war of independence.

The autograph book is part of a growing collection from the 1916-1923 period at Clare Museum. It was acquired by the museum November 2014 and is the only item in the museum collection at this time with a tangible link between County Clare and the Easter Rising.

An Interpretive Guide to the autograph book was researched and written by Dr Tomás Mac Conmara and is an initiative of the Clare 1916 commemorative programme. An online version is available from the Clare Museum website. It provides an analysis of the personalities recorded in the autograph book.

RTE featured the autograph book in their 1916-2016 centenary video for County Clare. media.
