Hand Grenade Shell

During the War of Independence, the IRA often had to be resourceful to make up for the shortage of arms and equipment. This hand grenade shell is one of two in the collection that was made at Jigg’s Forge, near Dysart O’Dea junction, Corofin, from a melted down gate. It was in the possession of Mid-Clare Brigade member, Volunteer Miko Foley of Parnell Street, Ennis, and was passed down through the family for almost a century before it’s donation to the Clare Museum.
