On the 14th October, 1920, twenty-one members of the Mid-Clare Brigade IRA attacked the heavily fortified RIC barracks at Ruan, on the outskirts of Ennis. Three members of the Royal Irish Constabulary were killed in the attack, and the IRA seized 15 Lee Enfield rifles, 14 revolvers, 1,000 rounds of ammunition, 3 boxes of hand grenades and 13 bicycles. One of the participants in the attack was Miko Foley of Parnell Street in Ennis, who also took this knuckleduster from the barracks during the attack. It has been passed down through the family over the years until its donation to the collection.
