Abbeys - Monuments of County Clare |
The arrival
of the Cistercian Order in Ireland in 1142 saw the beginning of the building
of abbeys in the country which expanded with the subsequent arrival of
Augustinians, Dominicans and Franciscans, whose monasteries are called
friaries. These buildings gradually replaced the older type of monastery
and comprised an open square or quadrangle containing a church, sacristy,
meeting room, refectory, kitchen and store room. There are four abbeys
in County Clare. |
