Cashels
are ringforts but enclosed by a stone wall rather than an earthen bank.
They were not normally military fortifications – although some were
- but would have contained small stone or wooden houses. The stone wall
provided shelter and kept domestic animals in and preying animals out.
Cashel are most plentiful in the west of Ireland and in Clare occur mainly
in north Clare and east of the River Fergus. Other names for Cashels are
Stone Forts and Cahers.
