Wayside Cairns - Monuments of County Clare |
Wayside
cairns are piles of stones situated close to a routeway. They can vary
in size and shape ranging from a few stones leaning together to larger,
more elaborate constructions. It is thought they may have originated
from the practice of making small piles of stones at places where funerals
halted. There is one recorded wayside cairn in County Clare, at Gleninagh
North, near Blackhead. |
