NOTE:
Rev Michael Roughan’s surname appears to be written as ‘Rohan’ in
the book ‘Kildysart A Proud History’ and a plague on the
wall inside Kildysart church.
There appears to be an inaccuracy regarding the age of Fr. Roughan. In
1821 his age is recorded as 31 but the biographical note states he
was in his 85th year at the time of his death in 1868. According to Ignatius
Murphy in one of his volumes, Michael Roughan, PP of Kildysart since
1837, died on 6 August 1868. Educated at Maynooth,
he was ordained in 1814. He served in Clarecastle and became PP of Kilmurry
McMahon in 1823. An interesting story relating to Rev. Michael Roughan
is documented in Ignatius Murphy’s ‘The Diocese of Killaloe
1800-1850’.
In 1826, Bishop O’ Shaughnessy appointed Fr Roughan PP of Kilfearagh
and Killard, following the death of Fr. McInerney. However, the parishioners
wanted Fr. McInerney’s brother, Fr. Thomas, to succeed, but the
bishop refused their request because Fr. Thomas ‘had a chronic
drink problem’. However, when Fr Roughan arrive at Doonbeg church
to say mass, a large group of people prevented him from entering the
church. The same thing happened at Lisdeen and Fr. Roughan eventually
returned to his Kilmurry McMahon parish.

____________
Biographical note
John O’Loghlen.
John O’Loghlen might be related to any (or none) of Terence O’Loughlen
who was associated with Freemasons Lodge no 69, Ennis, in 1785; M O’Loughlin,
a grocer in Mill Street [recorded in Lucas, Directory of Ennis, in 1788];
Patrick O’Loghlen, a stonemason, recorded in 1779-1796, who was
involved in building the Ennis quay wall; Mrs O’Laughlin from whose
house the Ennis Fly Coach departed three times a week, bound for Sandy’s
Hotel, Smithfield, Dublin in June 1789 [advertisement, Saunders Newsletter,
20 June 1789]; Dennis O’Loghlen who was a shop owner recorded in
1795/6 and Anthony O’Loughlen recorded between 1806-1809 [both
in Brian O’Dalaigh, The Corporation Book of Ennis, the latter also
in the Grand Jury Presentments, 1807 mentioning Andrew O’Loughlin
in connection with the Ennis gaol].
This John O’Loghlen is not a near relation of Colman O’Loghlen
of Port, near Ennis (d. 1810), or of Peter O’Loghlen of Clareville,
The Burren (d. 1823).
Perhaps, doubtfully, he might be the John O’Loughlin who was a
sub-constable for Corcomroe in 1807, though he was of Moymore (Liscannor)
in 1814 [Leet’s Directory, 1814].
He could be John O’Loughlin who, in 1839, left this inscription
to his mother: Erected by John O’Loughlin in memory of his mother,
Margaret O’Loughlin, who departed this life 4 November 1839, aged
55 years (Drumcliffe old cemetery).

Lucy Carrigg (their daughter).
Married on Monday morning at our church by Rev Michael Fitzgerald, Pierce
Carrigg of Cottage, Esq, to Eliza, daughter of the late James Roche of

Likely, he was the only child of George Bonynge and Miss (Catherine?)
Roche of Ennis, both then minors, who eloped and married at Gretna

John North Bonynge. (Evidence given in John North Bonynge v. Arthur
A Griffith and another, Court of Exchequer, before Baron Foster, January
1831, reported in the Dublin Morning Register, 12 January 1831). In
1852, he married Margaret Louisa Creagh of Carrigery, daughter of the

_____________
TWEEDY FAMILY IN 1821 CENSUS
Living in a 3 story house at 199 Jail St, Ennis –
Mrs Mary Tweedy, aged 33, gentlewoman
This is Mary nee Delahunty/Dulhunty, daughter of Thomas Dulhunty of Ennis
(died 1808) and his wife Susanna Colpoys who married in Limerick on 17
March 1780 (Farrar’s Index to Irish Marriages, and Marriages in

Michael Kerin.
In 1790, this advertisement appeared in the Ennis Chronicle:- Michael
Kerin has just returned from Dublin ... draper and grocer: Ennis Chronicle,
1 November 1790.
This looks suspiciously like Michael Kerin in the 1821 census but, if
he was born in 1790, perhaps the advertisement refers to his father.
He married in 1813: Yesterday by the Rev Dean Davine, Mr Michael Kerin,
cloth merchant of Church Street to Mary, eldest daughter of John R
McGrath Esq of Arthur’s Row (Ennis). Clare Journal 1 February
1813. Limerick Gazette, 5 February 1813.
He placed this advertisement in the newspaper in 1820: Advert: Michael
Kerin, woollen, linen, hosiery and hat warehouse, Ennis: Ennis Chronicle,
1 March 1820.
He appears in Pigot’s Directory, 1824 as a linen and woollen Draper,
in Church Street, Ennis.
Upon his death in 1845, the Clare Journal referred to- the demise in
Dublin of our much respected fellow townsman, Mr Michael Kerin, Cloth
Merchant ... He has left a fondly affectionate wife, and numerous family,
to mourn his removal. Clare Journal, 19 June 1845.
One of his family was Michael Kerin (1820-1869) who was educated at
the Ennis College and became an attorney. (Contributed by Mick O’Loghlen)
In overview, Crossle’s notes include more than 1,000 names and
approaching 200 houses. The notes pay particular attention to the following
names:-
Roughan;
Carrigg;
Mungavan (or Mungovan);
and to a lesser but significant extent:- Donnellan; Dulhunty; Pilkington.
As a notable and refreshing feature, the notes are not a homage to the
elite. The people named include:-
Paupers and mendicants;
Servants;
Washer women;
Flax workers;
Merchants engaged in retail businesses including bakers, tailors and
the like; Trades people including apprentices (with a couple of female
apprentices), shoemakers, chandlers, stone cutters and the like; Gardeners;
Caretakers; Farmers with small holdings; Soldiers; Clergy; School children;
Widows; and several gentlemen and gentlewomen.
Reference to Lucas Directory 1788 and The Corporation Book of Ennis
might help identify a few, e.g.-
Charles Roughan, weaver, aged 59;
David A England, gentleman farmer, aged 60; Cath Dulhunty, inn keeper,
aged 60; the vice provost, William Finucane- I don’t recall whether
Michael MacMahon’s article on the Finucanes in last year’s
TOC refers to him.
Maybe someone at the Local Studies Centre might want to look at this
aspect, and contribute short biographical notes.
As to the identification of people, crowd sourcing seems to me a useful
avenue. Sheila Duddy’s forum might produce, eventually, something
on a few Roughans.
You will have your hands full, overseeing the accuracy of the census
details.
Reference to Leet 1814 and Pigot 1824 indicates that many names are
missing.
An estimate of the total population, if available for about 1821, might
give an indication of the proportion of people represented in Crossle’s
notes. The relatively high incidence of widows, some quite young, deserves
comment (disease? civil unrest? warfare?). Is the pensioner a former
member of the armed services? Maybe someone at the Local Studies Centre
will uncover information about these and other matters, too.
The main interest, however, will centre on the family groups including,
occasionally, in laws, nieces and nephews.

Mary Kerin (his wife).
As several instances indicate, parents’ ages are not always stated
reliably in this census. According to Alumni Dublinenses (first edition),
this William Davoren was born about 1782, educated by his father, and
graduated from Trinity College, Dublin.
Rev. William Davoren, the second son of the Rev. Michael Davoren and
Rebecca Hunt, and Rector of the vicarage of Kiltonaghty and Clouney,
married Mary Kerin, a daughter of Andrew Kerin of Ballyally (parish of
Templemaley) and Ellen Powell, c.f. Ennis Chronicle, 21 May 1814. The
Glebe was, presumably, the Drimnacreeha Glebe house where their daughter
(Ellen) was born (Ennis Chronicle, 9 August 1820).
G U Macnamara, The O’Davorens of Cahermacnaughton, notes that their
sons, Michael, Andrew, Nathaniel, and Stratford, “are stated to
have all emigrated”.

Michael Finucane.
Ellen O’Brien (his wife).
Michael Finucane, son of Michael Finucane, MD, of Ennis and Bridget Kent,
married Ellen O’Brien of Ennistymon, with nine children. The census
names two of the youngest. Their daughter, Deborah (Mrs James Edwards)
appears elsewhere in this census. Likely, the census understates Ellen
O’Brien’s age. (Derived from Michael Mac Mahon, author of
Notes on the Finucanes of Moy and Ennistymon (2023) volume 47, The Other

her, as to cause her death. Counsellor Wolfe thought the novelty of the
present charge demanded from him some remarks. He then stated the case.
The deceased Mrs. Stacpoole was a peculiarly nervous lady, and in great
fear of fever. He was instructed that the prisoner being aware of this,
took advantage of the absence of her husband and servants to rush into
her presence, and demanded money, telling her that the clothes he wore
were taken from a house infected with fever; Mrs. Stacpoole ran from
him upstairs, but he had the audacity to follow her, using menaces to
endeavour to exact money from her; she again escaped into an avenue,
where he pursued and seized her, still continuing to threaten her, until
the appearance of a third person compelled him to desist. Mrs. Stacpoole
immediately took ill, and expired in nine hours after. The Learned Counsel
then read legal opinions on offences analogous to the present, which
constituted the crime of murder; such as that of firing a shot, or wilfully
driving a restive horse amongst a crowd of persons, thereby causing death;
and that of the unnatural son who exposed his sick parent, against his
will, to the air; and also of the harlot, who placed her infant in an
orchard, and a kite struck and killed it. In this case, however, he would
not press the charge of murder, but look for a conviction for manslaughter,
which, he was sure, could not be denied. The evidence was then gone through,
and fully supported the statement of the Learned Gentleman. The Jury
took about half an hour to consult, when they brought in a verdict of
Manslaughter. - To be imprisoned six months.
Mathias Stacpoole married for 2nd time on 13 June 1827 to Louisa Mary
McNamara, daughter of Captain John McNamara. Ennis Chronicle 20 June
1827
They had 2 daughters:
•
Sarah Jane born 1829 died 1846
•
Mary Louisa born 1831 died 1880
Mathias Stacpoole died 6 March 1835 at Moymore and was buried in the
Churchyard at Ennistymon.

Marriage. Last Saturday, at Ennistymon Church, Morgan Finucane of the

1 June 1816).
Will, dated 7 April 1832, of Morgan Finucane of the Cottage, Ennistymon, … MD
and Surgeon Royal Navy, left various bequests to his beloved wife, Ellen
Adams Brew, his son Charles, his daughter Ellen, and his daughter Eliza.
Morgan Finucane died 12 June 1833.
Ellen Adams Brew.
Despite a discrepancy, Ellen Adams Brew seems a daughter of Alice Adams
and a sister of Rebecca Brew (who married William “Bumbo” Greene,
an Ennis attorney). She died some time between April 1832 and 1836.
Earlier, Richard Brew of Tullycrine, Alice Adams, spinster, second
daughter of Charles Adams of Killoe (sic), and trustees, entered a
marriage settlement dated 27 May 1786, and they married shortly afterwards,
at Ennis, c.f. Saunders Newsletter, 6 June 1786. However, according
to an inscription in the Drumcliffe cemetery (if accurately transcribed
by Alfred Molony in 1905), Alice Adams died in 1789, aged 20 years.
The discrepancy, obvious enough, may have any of several possible explanations,
not explored here. Most likely, however, she gave a lady’s answer
to the rude question, How old are you? Probably, Ellen Adams Brew was
born in 1789 or a little earlier. Her father, Richard Brew, formerly
of Tullycrine but then of Richmond, died in 1818 (Ennis Chronicle,
20 May 1818).
Administration of Morgan Finucane’s estate was granted to (his
brother) James Finucane of Moy, near Ennistymon, the paternal uncle and

ADD-
Dr. Morgan Finucane was a son of John Finucane, Moy More, parish of
Kilfarboy, barony of Ibrickane [Miltown Malbay] and his wife, Catherine
Vaughan.
John Finucane was very much part of a Gaelic literary world that was
beginning to establish itself in the general area of Moy and Ennistymon
around the turn of the 18th century. Copies of at least five manuscripts
transcribed by Seaghan Ó Finnúcháin are now in the
National and Maynooth libraries. They include a copy of Keating's Foras
Feasa ar Éirinn running to some 300 pages transcribed 'chun usáide
a chloinne' [for the use of his family]. He is buried in the Finucane
mausoleum (built by his son Morgan) in the hilltop cemetery overlooking
the town of Ennistymon. The inscription states that he died on 11 May
1809 aged 60 yrs. (Contributed by Michael Mac Mahon, 2024)

Biographical note
Andrew Finucane, of Ennistymon House.
Andrew Finucane was educated by Rev John Moore and entered Trinity College,
Dublin in January 1798 (Alumni Dublinenses (1924 edition), p 281). He
was the only son and heir at law of the Hon Matthias Finucane, one of
the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas in Ireland, deceased (Ennis
Chronicle, 7 May 1825, retrieved by Declan Barron “Ireland old
news”). He was the only son (which may mean the only surviving
son), according to Francis Hayd’n, The Medical Mentor (Carlow,
1827), p 59. He was a magistrate, and deputy Lieutenant of County Clare.
He died in London on 11 May 1843 (Clare Journal, 15 May 1843), in his
62nd year.
His mother was Anne O’Brien, daughter of Edward O’Brien.
According to a report in the Dublin Evening Mail of 22 May 1843, the
landed property of the late Andrew Finucane, Esq, DL, Ennistymon House,
co Clare is estimated at £6,000 per year, free of encumbrances.
The report goes on to say, It is not now so certain that Capt Francis
McNamara, late 8th Husssars, inherits the whole of his uncle’s
estate, as the late Mr Finucane had two sisters, one married to the
Captain’s father, Major McNamara, and the other to James Finucane,
Esq, who has been some years on the Continent, and whose daughters
it is supposed will succeed to one moiety of the estate. Capt the Hon
Hugh O’Grady, RN, is married to one of those ladies.
Another of “those ladies” was Louisa, Lady Inchiquin, widow
of the 13th baron, died on Saturday at her residence in Queens gate,
in her 83rd year. Lady Inchiquin, who was the daughter of Major James
Finucane and one of the co-heiresses of Mr Andrew Finucane, Ennistymon
House, married in 1854, as his second wife, Sir Lucius O’Brien … (Clifton
Society, Bristol, England, 18 February 1904).
Andrew Finucane left daughters- 1. Emily Margaret, the oldest, who married
Francis Nesbitt Cullen, constabulary, youngest son of the late Lt Col
Cullen of Skreeny, co Leitrim, and Bridget Finucane (Clare Journal, 3
August 1854). 2. Honoria Maria, the second daughter, who married in Dublin
Edward Hickman Persse, son of Thomas Persse, JP, of Mount Vernon, co
Galway (Cork Examiner, 24 February 1870). 3. Louisa Ann, the youngest,
who married in Dublin Sir George J Wycherley, MD, Cork (Freeman’s
Journal, 8 September 1886).(Contributed by Mick O’Loghlen, 2024)
Andrew Finucane (1779-1843) was the only son of Mathias Finucane (1738-1814)
of Lifford House, Ennis, and his wife Ann O’Brien whom he afterwards
divorced. Andrew died unmarried but not childless: in his will dated
8 May 1843, he mentions “a natural son, Henry Andrew Pearson, South
St., Manchester Square, London, the son of Maria Pearson”, and
also three daughters by his common law wife Honora Slattery. Honora died
at Lifford House, Ennis, 29 August 1880 as “ Honora Slattery commonly
called Finucane.” The descendants of Andrew’s sister, Susanna
Mac Namara (1776-1816) inherited Ennistymon House. (Contributed by Michael
