Marcus McGrath was born in Newmarket-on-Fergus in 1874. His parents were Thomas McGrath (b.1840) and Bridget Scanlon (b. 1844) and his paternal grandparents were Marcus McGrath (b. 1810) and Anne McNamara (b. 1804), all from Newmarket-on-Fergus. Marcus was ordained to the priesthood in 1901 and was appointed curate in Ruan Parish in 1905. He laid the first stone for the new Ruan Church in 1910 and was instrumental in collecting money for the new building. Fr McGrath died in 1928.
