Mary Ellen’s
maternal grand-parents: Laurence Keane Married Catherine Keane Laurence/Larry Keane
He married Catherine/Kate Keane in Ireland. There were two men named Laurence Keane recorded in the Griffith's Valuation of Tenements, printed 1855, as holding leases in the Parish of Drumcreehy, Union of Ballyvaughan, County Clare; one in the Townland of Muckinish East and one in the Townland of Muckinish West. It is believed that the Laurence Keane living in Muckinish East is the father of Bridget, Mary and Patrick; this is based on detailed examination of all the available records, including land records, the 1901 Census, the death certificates of Laurence and Kate and the marriage certificate of Mary Ann Keane and John Joseph Leyden/Lydon. The Laurence Keane listed
in Muckinish East in the printed Griffith's Valuation of Tenements was
recorded as leasing the following allotments from William Ryan
in Muckinish East; Larry was recorded on the census of 1901
at Muckinish East, he was recorded as; Laurence died on 19 Sep 1910 at the Ballyvaughan Workhouse, Clare, Ireland, the certified cause of death was old age, his age was recorded as 100, and his occupation was recorded as Labourer (Copy of Death Certificate No 471, provided by Judy Smith, email dated 3 Dec 2008). Catherine/Kate Keane Kate died on 19 May 1899, of old age,
at the age of 80, at Muckinish, District of Ballyvaughan, Clare, Ireland,
it is recorded on the certificate that Kate was the wife of a Labourer
and her husband Laurence was present at her death (Copy of Death
Certificate No 297 provided by Judy Smith, email dated 27 Jan 2009).
