3. Patrick/Pat Keane was born in 1860 in Clare, Ireland. He was baptized on 2 Mar 1860 at Ballyvaughan, Clare, the Sponsors were Daniel and Mary Diviny (Information on Sponsors provided by Judy Smith, email 19 Nov 2008 and List of Keane Baptisms for the Parish of Ballyvaughan, from Clare County Library, copy provided by Judy Smith, email dated 15 Jan 2009).

Patrick left Plymouth on 23 Feb 1883 on the Dundee and arrived in Port Adelaide on 28 May 1883. He is recorded on the passenger list as 23 years, single, Irish, agricultural labourer. There were 563 passengers, of whom 38 were Irish (Information provided by Judy Smith, email dated 13 Feb 2009). The ship's Surgeon was William Baly, there were six babies born on the voyage and five deaths on the voyage, four infants, including a baby born on board and a child of three (CD, Bound for South Australia: Births & Deaths on Government-Assisted Immigrant ships 1848-1885, copy provided by GSV).

Patrick first worked in South Australia then, at some time in the early 1890's, Patrick, like many thousands of young men from the eastern states, travelled to Western Australia to take advantage of the prosperity generated by the gold rush.

He married Margaret Whitely, daughter of James Whitely and Johanna Walsh, on 25 Sep 1895 at the Catholic Church, Fremantle, Western Australia. Their marriage was conducted by Catholic Priest the Rev D. O'Ryan; the witnesses were William Byrnes and Bridget Whitely, the sister of the bride.

Patrick, above the age of 21 years, Bachelor, occupation Quarryman, Residence at the time of marriage - North Fremantle.
Margaret, above the age of 21 years, Spinster, no occupation, Residence at the time of Marriage - Fremantle (WA Marriage Certificate No 473, Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages).

He was listed on the Electoral Roll for Western Australia in 1901 at Napier Rd, North Fremantle, Western Australia, his occupation was recorded as Fitter (Ancestry.com.uk, WA Electoral Rolls, website).

Patrick died of Cardiac Syncope on 1 Aug 1904, aged 44, at the Public Hospital, Fremantle, Western Australia. His burial was ordered by Coroner, Robert Fairbairn R.M. Patrick's occupation was recorded as Fettler on his death certificate, it was also recorded that he had been in Western Australia for 10 years (Copy of WA Death Certificate No 1114, provided by Judy Smith, email dated 12 Nov 2008).

The following item appeared in The Daily News 1 Aug 1904

Death at Fremantle Hospital: Patrick Keane who, yesterday afternoon, was found in an unconscious condition, in a tent at North Fremantle, and was removed to the Fremantle Hospital, died at that institution early this morning. As there were no indications of foul play found on the deceased and Dr Deravin was of the opinion that death was due to heart failure, an inquest was considered unnecessary. The deceased, who was employed as a fettler on the railway was a widower, 45 years of age. He leaves one grown-up son [sic]

The following notices appeared in the West Australian 2 Aug 1904

Keane: - The friends of the late Mr Patrick Keane are respectfully invited to follow the remains to the place of internment, the Roman Catholic portion of the Fremantle Cemetery. The funeral is appointed to leave No 43 Tuckfield St, Fremantle this Tuesday afternoon 2nd instant at 3 o'clock.

Margaret Whitely

Margaret Whitely. Her married name was Keane. She was born on 8 Oct 1861 at York, Western Australia (Reg No 6412/1862 Births, Deaths & Marriages, WA and information from the Dictionary of Western Australians provided by Judy Smith, email dated 13 Nov 2008).

Margaret died of Mitral regurgitation and Syncope on 12 Aug 1899, aged 37, at Harvest Rd, North Fremantle, Western Australia. She was buried on 13 Aug 1899 in the Fremantle Roman Catholic Cemetery, Western Australia, Section MON CC, gravesite 0321, Roman Catholic Priest, Father P. O'Reilly, officiated at the funeral (Death Certificate No 245, Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, WA and Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, WA, Name Search, website).

The following obituary was published in the West Australian on Tuesday 15 August 1899.

KEANE.- At her residence, Harvest Rd, North Fremantle, on the 12th August, Margaret, the beloved wife of Patrick Keane, and daughter of the late Mr. James Whitely, of York, in her 38th year. R.I.P

After the death of his parents, Patrick was cared for by his maternal Aunt, Bridget Whitely (Information from the Dictionary of Western Australians provided by Judy Smith, email dated 13 Nov 2008 and confirmed by his daughter Ruth Annice).

Bridget Whitely and her mother Johanna were listed in the 1905 WA Electoral Rolls at Malcolm St, Fremantle, both their occupations were listed as Home Duties. Also living at the same address were Thomas Whitely and his wife Charlotte (nee O'Grady), Thomas' occupation was Contractor and Charlotte's was Home Duties.

In 1916 Bridget and Johanna were listed at Off Malcolm St Fremantle, Johanna was listed as Widow, Bridget as Dressmaker (Ancestry.com.uk, WA Electoral Rolls, website).

In 1925, after Johanna's death in 1918, Bridget was listed at 150 Glyde St Fremantle, occupation Dressmaker, Patrick James Keane, now of age to vote, is also listed, occupation Insurance Agent, also living at the same address was James Wilfred Whitely, son of Patrick and Louisa (nee Moffat) Whitely, and nephew of Bridget, occupation Clerk (Ancestry.com.uk, WA Electoral Rolls, website).

Patrick married Dorothy Nowell Spry, daughter of William J Spry and Lydia Gabriel, in 1931 at Fremantle, Western Australia (Reg No 210, WA Births, Death & Marriages, online index, website).

Dorothy Nowell Spry. Her married name was Keane. Dorothy's birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1902 at Camelford, Cornwall, England (GRO, Births Registered Oct-Dec 1902, Vol 5c, page 11).

Dorothy died on 24 Nov 1971, aged 69, at the Fremantle Hospital, Western Australia, her residence was recorded as East Fremantle (Fiche, WA Index to Deaths, 1906-1980, Reg No 714/71, information provided by GSV, email dated 5 Feb 2009).
