The Gate Graveyard, Carrownakilly, Ogonnelloe (Complete as of 2004) 1812-1997 Ogonnelloe/Killaloe area Transcriptions from Headstones Michael McNamara, Ogonnelloe |
The Gate Graveyard is situated in the townland of Carrownakilly, between Ogonnelloe and Killaloe. Michael McNamara says:
“An interesting custom at the Gate Graveyard is that the coffin
is carried around the outside of the graveyard before it is taken inside.
They say it goes back in history to the times the churches were closed.
When someone died their corpse was brought at night and carried around
the church and then laid at the front door and prayers said. The custom
seems to have carried on for a few hundred years.” |
