A 1626 document listing
the rents due to the 5th Earl of Thomond (1589-1639) is transcribed
and analysed here. It sheds valuable light on the Anglicisation
process in the early seventeenth century and in particular helps
in understanding the process of transition of Thomond from a Gaelic
lordship to an increasingly anglicised county under the stewardship
of the Earls of Thomond. The Rental can be found in the Petworth
House Archives, Sussex, UK and is also available on microfilm
in the
Clare material from the Petworth House Archives at Clare County
Library's Local
