Notes on the Poets of Clare by Thomas F. O’Rahilly

Donnchadh Ruadh Mac Conmara

Of Donnchadh Ruadh MacConmara (Denis Mac Namara) it is unnecessary to say much here, for as a poet he belongs rather to East Munster than to Clare. He was born in Cratloe, Co. Clare, about 1715; but he left his native county in early life, and does not appear to have ever returned to it. Most of his long life was spent as a schoolmaster in Co. Waterford: though he made a journey overseas to Newfoundland, and is said to have also visited the Continent. Fifteen poems in Irish by him have come down to us, of which the longest and best known is Eachtra Ghiolla an Amarráin: all but one, have been printed. He died in 1810 and was buried at Newtown near Kilmacthomas.
