Plugins
Plug-ins are software programs that extend the capabilities of your Web Browser in a specific way -
giving you, for example, the ability to play audio samples, view video movies or control interactive
content from within your browser.

SVG Plugin
for Ordnance Survey Maps

Our online Ordnance Survey maps have been created using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). Before you can access these maps, you will need to download an 'SVG Viewer' (plugin) for your browser. The Adobe SVG Viewer integrates with your Web browser as a plug-in, allowing you to interact with SVG images and is required to view Web content that contains SVG. Our Ordnance Survey maps will currently only work with the Internet Explorer browser (Version 5.5+) on Windows 98-XP PCs.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) was introduced as an open standard by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1999 for publishing animation and for interactive applications using vector graphics on the Web. SVG is a text-based graphics language that describes images with vector shapes, text, and embedded raster graphics. SVG files are compact and provide high-quality graphics on the Web, in print, and on resource-limited handeld devices. In addition, SVG supports scripting and animation, so is ideal for interactive, data-driven, personalized graphics. SVG is a royalty-free vendor-neutral open standard developed under the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) Process.

ExpressView (MrSID) Plugin
for David Rumsey Maps

One set of our David Rumsey maps has been created using ExpressView (MrSid) image compression software from LizardTech, and requires the downloading and installation of the appropriate plugin.

ExpressView Browser Plug-in (formerly MrSID Browser Plug-in) gives browsers the ability to natively view MrSID and JPEG2000 images. The intuitive graphic user interface allows you to view, magnify, print and save images.

ExpressView Browser Plug-in is free for individual use and is easily installed as a plug-in for Internet Explorer andFirefox web browsers.

One set of the David Rumsey maps of Clare is available in JPEG format in simple HTMP pages, and this set does not require the use of a plugin.
