Clare Moments - Art Exhibition by Philip Brennan
Cultúrlann Sweeney, Kilkee, Co. Clare
Philip Brennan is a native of County Clare. He has been exhibiting
his work since the late ‘seventies, the current exhibition
being his 23rd solo show. He works mainly in watercolour, but also
in other media. His work covers a wide range of subjects, including
landscape, seascape, flora and fauna, historical themes, music-associated
ideas, people and interpretive work based on all of the above.
He is strongly influenced by his background as an active naturalist,
but his roots in his native county are perhaps his greatest influence.
His work is very much based on field-sketching and he has pursued
this approach at home and on wildlife expeditions in Senegal and
Canada. As a traditional singer, he has won both Munster and All-Ireland
competitions for newly composed songs and singing. A painting of
his was presented by Clare County Council to President Michael
D
Higgins at a civic reception a number of years ago.
As well as his exhibitions, he has published two books of paintings
and writing, Philip Brennan’s Clarein
2002,
the first such book for the county, and Wanderings in
2006. He has also done a lot of illustrative work, most notably
Birds
of Killarney woodlands for the OPW in 1996. While most of his exhibitions
have been in Munster, he has exhibited in Dublin, Wisconsin and
at the Florence Biennale, has done artist residencies in Wales
and a
large number of public wildlife paintings around Ireland.

2nd to 28th September 2019
Art Exhibition by Artist Nara Coates
Scariff Library Gallery
Visual artist Nara Coates lives in Co Clare on the west coast
of Ireland, a place with an ever changing light and movement of
atmosphere. In Ireland in one day you can see colours change according
to the dictates of which way the light of the sun is falling. The
play of light inspires her to paint and indeed it is what gives
her paintings meaning.
By using light and dark shadows in her work, her aim is to fully
bring to life the true form of whatever subject she is trying to
paint and in whatever atmospheric light. Her endeavour is always
to follow this light in order to enhance the fullness of form in
her paintings.
Her paintings come together in a special moment of light captured
in its entirety.
The Play of Light runs from the 2nd – 28th of September and
is open to all members of the community.

2nd to 23rd September, 2019
Exhibition: Wild Atlantic Inspiration by Kim Thittichai
Cultúrlann Sweeney
Official opening
on September 4th at 6 pm
Kim Thittichai is a textile artist, international tutor, and author
of 4 books. Kim moved to Fodra on Loop Head from Brighton U.K. in
November 2016 looking for a change of pace. It was a big change,
but she
has found that it was worth making that leap from a very busy and
noisy city to the peace and beauty of the Loop Head Peninsula.
The
rock pools of Ross Bay are an endless delight to Kim. The layer upon
layer of texture and colour of the seaweeds are a never-ending
inspiration. Kim has always taken photographs for creative reference
and teaching aids for composition. The stunning local natural landscape
of the cliffs and fields and local buildings all inspire Kim in
her work and photography.
Kim’s latest flight of fancy is to create a range of work
based on the hares that run around and play in the yard out side
her house. There is one, larger hare, that has been christened ‘Harry’.
He is subject of her latest body of work. Harry is a whimsical,
rather magical, character that is going to keep Kim busy for a
while to come.
Sonas Studio is where Kim works, next to her house
at Fodra, between the Bridges of Ross and the lighthouse. There
are regular Open
Studio weekends where you go and chat to Kim and see what she is
up to.
You can look at Kim's extensive work at her website www.kimthittichai.com

Emigration from Clare and Limerick – Kilkee Civic
Trust Talk with Jane Halloran Ryan
Cultúrlann Sweeney at 8 pm
Jane Halloran
Ryan will recount the experience of emigration, the personal pain,
the tears, searing loneliness, forever farewells, the Irish Wake,
the experience upon arrival in the New World, Ellis Island, new ways
of living; ultimately a new life for those fortunate enough to survive
the journey; and place it all in the context of the world before
modern transport by sea and air; when, if you were literate, and
most were not, communication was by letter taking several weeks to
reach its recipient.
Jane Halloran Ryan is the principal and founder
of Dalcassian Origins, a family and local history and genealogy
research service based in county Clare. Growing up in America;
her own interest
and experience in genealogy began in her teens when she started
her own family research journey, bringing her back to Ireland,
and her
roots, where she now lives in her ancestral parish of Tulla in
East County Clare. Jane is a Solicitor and member
of the
Law Society of Ireland. Her legal background, armed with a Certificate
in History of Family & Genealogical Research Methods from University
of Limerick and later her M.A. in Local History at University of
Limerick in 2017; is a powerful skill set, drawing on genealogical & legal
research methods, enabling her to deal knowledgably with queries
and research work including house histories, heir research services,
family research reports and genealogy consultations. Generously;
Jane undertakes volunteer work for “Ireland Reaching
Out”,
acting as Parish Liaison for Tulla, Co. Clare.

Life in the Darkness – Kilkee Civic Trust talk at
8 pm
Cultúrlann Sweeney
Topic Title: Life in the Darkness
Speaker: Jim Warny
Topic Description: Jim Warny, will provide a personal account of
the Tham Luang Cave Rescue mission. In June and July 2018, a widely
publicised Cave Rescue successfully extricated members of a junior
football team trapped in Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai Province,
Thailand. Twelve members of the team, aged eleven to seventeen,
and their 25-year-old assistant coach entered the cave on 23 June
after football practice. Shortly afterwards, heavy rains partially
flooded the cave, trapping the group inside. The rescue efforts
were an extremely treacherous task that involved people from across
the globe. Jim was part of the team of Cave Rescue Specialists that
spearheaded the operation. The story of the search and recovery
of the boys, and their coach, is truly gripping and an inspiring
tale of humanity working together against all odds to save the lives
of the young soccer players. Jim will take you through the sequence
of events in detail and provide a first hand account of the extraction
efforts that lasted 3 days, which involved transporting the boys,
one by one, through several kilometres of flooded cave passages.
About the speaker: Jim Warny; a Belgian Cave Explorer is based in
the west of Ireland. He has been actively involved in Cave Exploration
and rescue for 20 years. For Jim; exploration is his passion and
true calling in life. He regularly explores and documents places
no one has ever laid eyes on. Caves are truly one of the last frontiers
on our planet. Jim will take you on a journey through these harsh
yet beautiful places with imagery collected over the many years
he spent in the intense darkness. The act of visiting these places
in a safe and efficient way is truly rewarding and inspiring. Jim
believes the true Spirit of Exploration is something that every
human is endowed with from birth and that it is the very essence
of human evolution. Subsequently; Jim participated in the production
and filming of a feature film telling the story of the many volunteers
participating in the Tham Luang Cave Rescue. For his efforts in
in the rescue Jim was honoured and awarded a Knighthood of the Leopold
Order by the King of Belgium.

Ellen Hanly – Colleen Bawn – The Eye Witness
Accounts
Cultúrlann Sweeney at 8 pm
Admission: €8
On the 200th anniversary of this notorious murder Full Moon Theatre
presents ‘Ellen Hanly – Colleen Bawn – The Eye
Witness Accounts’ abridged and dramatised by Rob Hopkins.
Based on the eyewitness accounts of Richard Fitzgerald nephew of
the principal magistrate at Ellen Hanly’s inquest and also
the famous “found diaries” published in the Limerick
Journal in 1947, the play brings its audience into intimate contact
with the key protagonists of this dramatic saga.
As the story unfolds we join the newly-weds on the Limerick Kilrush
ferry, the dispute which brings to light that her clothes have been
pawned, bear witness at the beech side inquest, attend the trial
and the dramatic confession of Lieutenant Scanlan’s foster
brother / manservant Stephen Sullivan, poor Eily’s executioner.
But was he acting on his master’s instruction or taking dreadful
measures to cover the tracks of his own spurned advances?
At a highly volatile time in Ireland’s history the ascendency
closed ranks and sacrificed one of its own, a degenerate blue blood
who crossed the boundaries of class, religion and humane society
to orchestrate a despicable murder.Rob Hopkins Full Moon Theatre

world, this is music from the heart, for the heart… A show
to make you laugh and cry… A show to move you with its honest
beauty… A show not to be missed.
Recorded in New York with eight time Grammy winning engineer and
mixer Kevin Killen at the helm (David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, U2,
Elvis Costello), ‘Oh,The Starlings’ has been described
by songwriter Rodney Crowell as: “So good, it’s heartbreaking…
the record itself feels like an old friend.”
Having already won the kinds of reviews that signal their elevation
onto the international stage, Kieran Goss and Annie Kinsella’s
‘Oh, The Starlings’ is a work of art with poetry and
melody at its heart. While at times reminiscent of the great music
of the 70s – Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen –
Goss and Kinsella have undeniably succeeded in creating something
magnificently, uniquely theirs: an album that is both classic and
modern, simple and multi-layered, quiet and dynamic.

Visual artist Anne Stewart

in a Divided Community’’, a visual art exhibition by

and secondary schools (a school she and her siblings had attended)
had died as a direct result of “The Troubles”. Stewart’s
artwork response to these findings and that of her own life, growing
up in a violent and discriminatory area of north Belfast. In this
show Stewart sets out to pay tribute to all those affected by these
troubled times and through this show she wants to remember the forgotten
children of Stella Maris.

27th May to 26th June, 2019
Mountshannon Arts Festival – Visible Reminders of Invisible
Light
Scariff Library Gallery
The concept behind this exhibition is to explore a personal response
to the collections of the Hunt Museum and Limerick Museum’s
collections as the source of departure. Each artist was asked to select
two works, one from the Hunt Museum and one from the Limerick Museum’s
Collections (preferably with a family related theme) and form a visual
or short narrative response to these objects as a point of departure.
This enlarged exhibition of twenty three artists is primarily a mixed
media response to personally selected objects from the collections
of the Hunt and Limerick Museums. The physical outcomes manifest themselves
as emotional, spiritual and critical interpretations to the collections
with a reflection on ‘The Family’ as the core theme, be
this a concept, an ideal, a memory or an experienced reality. It is
a development of and continuation of an ancient conversation between
many parties by today’s artistic practitioners.
See Visible
reminders of invisible light for more details.

Resource Room
Spás at glór at 12.30pm.
The First Friday Series in association with Clare Arts Office and
glór. Join us for Sara's talk and a light lunch in the Spás
at glór at 12.30pm.
The Artists' Resource Room is a visual artist-led community group
providing a space for artistic dialogue in Co. Clare in the form
of regular meetings, presentations, artist film screenings and debates.Sara
Foust was born in 1970 in America and spent her childhood on a rural
farm in the deep South. Sara trained at Brown University and Rhode
Island School of Design in the USA, and with master muralist Susan
Cervantes in San Francisco, California where she painted for many
years. She has lived and worked on the west coast of Co Clare since
2002, and is deeply inspired by the landscape of the west. Sara
exhibits her artwork throughout Ireland and internationally. Her
work has been supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Clare
County Council, and commissioned by CREATE, Leader/RRD, Cluid Housing
and HSE, and is in many private collections in Ireland, UK and America.
In her layered and textural landscapes, Sara explores emotional
resonance, nostalgia and architectural narrative. Sara pushes the
viewer into her landscapes with vigorous marks and vibrant palette,
conveying a visual immediacy which enhances the play of illusion
and flattening within each painting. Sara paints in her studio gallery
in Ennistymon, Co Clare, where she also sells work by local fine
craft artists.
