Revamp Sought for Library

Clare Champion, Friday, 7th July 2006

Clare County Librarian, Noel Crowley, has confirmed that tenders for a €500,000 revamp of the Sweeney Memorial Library in Kilkee will be sought this Autumn. The work will incorporate a major refurbishment of the library which was opened in 1951.

The library was originally built from money that was donated by Dr. William Sweeney after whom it is named. Funding for the current project was secured by Noel Crowley from the Commissioners of Charitable Requests and Donations.

The library windows and shelves will be replaced and Noel says that the work "will bring Kilkee library into the new century". He described Kilkee library as "well ahead of its time", when it first opened in 1951.

However, work won't commence until the summer season finishes in Kilkee. The local Civic Trust use it for delivering lectures, while Kilkee Town Council meet at Sweeney Memorial Library for their monthly meetings. Over 1,000 members used the library in 2005, while 20,000 books were issued and 6,000 hours of Internet access were booked.
