Michael J Glynn Photo ExhibitionClare Champion, Friday, 1st June 2007Plans for a countywide exhibition showcasing the many photographs captured by renowned Clare Champion photographer, the late Michael John Glynn, are currently underway. The exhibition is expected to cost in the region of €3,000 to stage, as it will feature enlarged versions of Michael John's photographs displayed at various locations around the county. With photographs including the FCA to Benjy's Lahinch honeymoon filmed for RTÉ's The Riordans, the display will be enthralling to say the least. Head librarian and exhibition organiser, Noel Crowley, said, "A major exhibition of Michael John's photographs depicting life in north Clare is definitely going to take place. For the exhibition, we will be enlarging a selection of photographs so that people will be able to see more details in each picture. We will also be including the names of the people seen in the photographs as well as the event that is taking place. There will be a reasonable number of photos on display and they will be chosen to represent Michael John's work". At this week's meeting of Ennistymon Area Council, Mayor Flan Garvey proposed to hold the first stage of the exhibition at a venue in Ennistymon rather than in Ennis, as it is the hometown of Michael John. Councillors present at the meeting also agreed that the north Clare town would be the most appropriate as many of Michael John's photographs were shot in the area. Ennistymon Councillor, Martin Conway, described the upcoming exhibition as a "phenomenal opportunity" for the people of north Clare and pointed out the importance of appreciating the work of such a respected individual. "I was talking to the librarian about this project and he is very anxious to do it right. There are sack loads of Michael John's photograph negatives and it is so important that we appreciate the value of his great work. This exhibition will provide a wonderful opportunity for people to see the way life used to be in Clare", he said. Mayor Flan Garvey added, "Michael John was an amazing character with a wonderful talent. It's only right that an exhibition of his photographs is held in his hometown first. Everybody loves seeing his work in The Clare Champion and this exhibition will definitely be of great interest to many people around the county. |
