World Book Day Celebrates Clare's Libraries

World Book Day was marked at de Valera Library in Ennis on Thursday last with an event called 'Celebrating Libraries'. It was an evening of readings, poetry, music and chat. Writers taking part included popular Galway poet Rita Ann Higgins, Clare-based Knute Skinner and Goeran Peterson. It also included talks by Sonia Schorman and Eleanor Feely and music by Madeline Arkins.

Over the past ten years World Book Day has become firmly established as the biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. A host of events were held at libraries around the county to mark the day including poetry workshops, author readings and library tours.

Storytime sessions for young children took place in de Valera Library, Ennis, Kildysart, Killaloe, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket-on-Fergus and Kilkee libraries. Dingle-based poet, Bríd Ní Mhoráin held special Seachtáin na Gaeilge workshops for children in the libraries in Ennis and in Shannon.

Two local writers met with children from national schools in Miltown Malbay Library while Kilkee and Kilrush Libraries held art and craft workshops. Ennistymon Library are exhibiting an Art Display. Local historian, Hugh Weir, visited Tulla Library to talk about famous landlord houses of county Clare while a Big Book Quiz’ took place in Scariff Library.
