Due to the Covid-19 pandemic all in-branch events have been suspended until further notice but in the meantime we have some Online Events that may be of interest to you.

We have Online Storytime and Online Crafts for children running for the months of April and May as part of the Spring Into Storytime programme.

Roald Dahl Day 2020 Colouring Competition
Seán Lemass Public Library, Shannon

Shannon Public Library is celebrating one of our most borrowed and best-loved authors, Roald Dahl, with a colouring competition to mark Roald Dahl Day 2020. To win a Roald Dahl goodie bag, get colouring and get your entry to Shannon Public Library before 4pm on Wednesday, 30th September either in person or by post. The competition is open to children aged 4 to 12 years. Winners will be announced on the 5th October. You can get your colouring sheet in the branch or download it here.

An Unexpected Adventure - Short Story Competition
This year, as well as enjoying the all the amazing worlds you visit when reading books, Summer Stars is celebrating your imagination by running a short story competition.
Public libraries are calling on all 6-18 year olds to write a story, no more than 500 words, on An Unexpected Adventure. Of course, 6 year olds won’t be competing against teenagers! There are three age categories: age 6-9, age 10-14, age 15-18.
There will be 15 finalists in each category and one national winner from each category. Each winner will receive a Tablet and each finalist will receive a €50 voucher. That's a lot of great prizes and a lot of chances to win!
So let your imagination take you on an unexpected adventure and start writing today!

Summer Stars Stories from County Clare

Online on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at 11.30am.
To celebrate our annual children’s reading programme Niall de Burca will bring you a fascinating array of stories of County Clare based on heroes, legends and places you may or may not have heard of. Now you can listen to these tales by tuning in to Niall on Clare County Library’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram every Tuesday in August beginning on the 4th at 11.30am. Each story will be family friendly and will encourage engagement with books in libraries.
Niall is already well known to many of Clare Library’s young readers, Niall is one of Ireland’s finest and most-loved performers.

The Journey to Mad Space! - includes 5 creative writing webinars for children aged 8 to 12
One session per week each Tuesday from 11am to 12pm
As part of its Summer Stars 2020 Reading Programme Clare County Library invites children to join author and workshop facilitator Maeve Devoy on the most exciting journey ever to the most exciting place imaginable and all you have to do is register for this unique adventurous writing webinar by Friday July 3rd. There is a limit of 25 participants so don’t delay!
To register parents must contact: giving their child’s name and age. Please type Summer Stars Project MAD Space in the subject heading of your email. The webinars will be hosted over ZOOM!

Inis Cathaigh Kilrush Comhaltas - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.
All day

The junior members of Inis Cathaigh Kilrush Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will showcase their videos of music, song, dance and storytelling at home and they will be featured hourly on the group's Facebook page for Cruinniú na nÓg. Online tutorials will also be uploaded throughout the day. These include a concertina class with Colm Browne, flute with Kieran Killeen, banjo with Diarmuid Donnellan, accordion with Liam Browne, storytelling with Kieran Moroney and sean nós dancing with Emma Fennell.

Shannon Teens Rap with Godknows - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Clare rapper and performer Godknows will present a rap session which will include teenagers from Shannon. This event will be streamed live on Youtube, the link will be provided on Creative Ireland Clare FB on 13 June.

'A State of Isolation' - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

This initiative by Emma Sams is aimed at capturing what young people are experiencing during the Covid pandemic. Whilst isolated in their homes they were posted materials and asked to create a visual and written piece and post them in. These pieces will be put together in a digital format with music composed by young people in isolation. 100+ young people throughout the island of Ireland have participated in this project.

Behind the Scenes trailer for PADDY- A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

A behind the scenes look of the short film, PADDY, which was shot in county Clare and will premiere at Film Festivals later in the year.
The story features Patrick, a young Londoner growing up in the 1970’s, who questions his identity. Living with his widowed mother and younger sister, he’s trying to honour his late Father's memory by learning Irish music, but he discovers another music.
The film was directed by Roisín Kearney, produced by Maeve McGrath and Keith Bogue from a script by Sinéad Collopy. Open castings were held in Ennis for the young actor roles in the film. Shooting was primarily in Ennis and Shannon.

In a Time of Challenge and Change: One for All and All for One - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Clare Youth Theatre present their artistic response to the new world they are experiencing. Using their many talents and skills, the young cast have created dramatic explorations of resilience, identity, being alone together, solidarity, comedy and hope. Contains both original and classic material and is suitable for all ages, but in particular 12 to 18 year olds.

'Mal agus Cú Chulainn' film - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

A cut out stop motion by Eimhear Lillis collaborating with Shona MacGillivray, supported by Embrace Programme, County Clare Arts Office and the National Learning Network. The ancient folktale of Mal, a witch, who fell in love with the hero Cú Chulainn. She chased him around the Cliffs of Moher as he avoided her advances. The fit hero, who proved not much of a gentleman in this case, leapt from cliff to stack .Initially a wind carried Mal across, but this magic then failed her (spoiler!) and she was fatally dashed upon the rocks at Hag's Head.

Music Generation Harpists - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Aisling Lyons and her Music Generation Harp Ensemble perform in this 30 minute video of 'Tale as Old as Time' from Beauty and the Beast. These young harpers from Co Clare began playing in February 2019 and are aged between 8 and 16 years.

Brickflicks - Stop Motion with Lego Animation Course - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.
(tutorials available in advance)
Learn to make a film using stop motion animation. All you need is a mobile device with a camera, a Lego minifigure and your own imagination. This course will be delivered using a blended approach of online instructions/tutorials and offline activity creating animation. This session will not be streamed, the course material will be accessible online and instructors will be available online to assist and support. Suitable for 9 years+. A Facebook Live session of #KitchenScience for kids to follow along as we demonstrate live exciting experiments with things you will find in your kitchen. ‘Birdsong’ Codordojo with Ana Colomer and Ciara Miesle - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.
(tutorial available in advance)
A live coderdojo session online where children can learn how to put the ‘Birdsong’ game together. Children are welcome to try and learn basic coding using Scratch. This step by step game uses watercolour illustrations of birds, that children can see in their gardens and learn about the sound and song that is unique to them. The advance tutorial is available at:

Moving Portraits - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.
LCYP (Local Creative Youth Partnership) is running an online workshop for young people who would like to create their own Moving Portrait. Voice coaching, editing, dialogue and copyright are some of the areas to be covered. Library Crafts with Aishling - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Aishling from Shannon Library presents two craft videos from Clare County Library. Her first video shows how to make a Gruffalo puppet. The second video shows how to make a cardboard theatre and decorate it to show plays using your puppet. You will need a toilet roll tube, prittstick, some brown coloured paper (or use your colours and white paper), a lollipop stick and some wool. Suitable for 5-10 year olds.

Clare Heritage Office Projects for Children - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Clare Heritage Office manages the 'Heritage in Schools' scheme in conjunction with the Heritage Council. In this video, heritage expert Fionn Crombie Angus teaches children how to do a Bioblitz in their backyard. Suitable for 1st-4th class. Fionn explains what a BioBlitz is and what equipment and guides are useful to have before leading us through a blitz of his own back garden. The Heritage Office also produced two booklets on the Birds of Prey / Raptors of Clare, Galway and Tipperary in conjunction with BirdWatch Ireland. Download the booklets at the links below.

'My Nature' film - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

This short film features a range of children in West Clare who have created a short piece to camera talking about nature in their area. Why it's important, what it means to them at this time and, what their favourite parts of nature are in their area. This short film created and written by Jacinta Sheerin and film director Maeve Stone, will be framed by Jacinta Sheerin’s introduction and closing, using drone footage to capture our beautiful Clare landscape

'Frog and the Mouse': Online Traditional Song Workshop - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Traditional singer Aileen Lambert has a lovely old song to share with you about a strange wedding which took place between a frog and a mouse! Aileen’s version is based on a recording of P Joe Hayes' Feakle, which is featured in the Carroll Mackenzie Collection. For ease of learning, Aileen breaks the song down line by line and follows it with a sing-through complete with subtitles, so the whole family can sing along. Aileen is accompanied here by her daughter Nellie (age 10).

Poetic Play - A Cruinniú na nÓg event.

Poetic Play is a non-verbal movement video made by dance artist Maria Svensson as an invitation to play and with the aim to inspire. Using simple movement, sounds and bath crayons, Maria gently shares ideas and possibilities on how to play with your toddler in the comfort of your own home. To help create the magical atmosphere Poetic Play also features music by composer and singer Fiona Kelleher. Put your least favourite loungewear on, one that you don’t mind getting covered in crayons, and enjoy your own colourful and poetic play. Spread the magic. Suitable for toddlers and small children.

The Writer's Retreat - on-line course - A Creative Ireland Event
These 5 workshops with author Helen Blackhurst will explore the art of fiction and memoir writing. Writers will have the opportunity to process their own work, explore writing challenges, and create new work within the group. Each workshop will run for one and a half hours.
