All the Clare entries from Lewis's Topographical
Dictionary of Ireland (1837), reprinted in alphabetical order, with the
original preface, a list of the Clare subscribers to the original book
and an index, thus presenting, as it says, "a pre-famine snapshot
of Clare". Last summer we recorded a facsimile reprint of Lewis (with
his counties Atlas) available from Kennys of Galway in three volumes at
£145, and this idea of a reprint of the entries for one county is
obviously a good one for those who can't or don't want to afford the all-Ireland
book. The Clare map from Lewis's atlas forms the front endpaper. It is
one of the products of the Clare Local Studies Project, set up by the
County Library in partnership with FÁS as a training-cum-employment
scheme, the trainees being responsible for finding the entries, putting
them on to computer and reading proofs. The book is exceptionally well
designed and presented in an attractive jacket and binding, and the skill
and taste thus displayed must have rubbed off on the trainees and left
them justifiably proud of their work.
