County Clare, A History and Topography

Clare Champion
December 1995

The Topography of County Clare was originally published in 1837 as part of Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of Ireland….The entries for Clare total over 50,000 words, giving a pre-Famine snapshot of the county.

Published by CLASP Press and based on Lewis' original work, County Clare: A History and Topography by Samuel Lewis represents a massive undertaking by the Clare Local Studies Project (CLASP) group which was set up as an independent organisation by members of the Clare County Library staff to develop an awareness of and increase access to sources for local studies.

As a local organisation using local talents and resources for the benefit of the community, CLASP received enormous assistance by linking up with FÁS, the national training authority.

The new publication is greatly enhanced by the inclusion of a special introduction by local historian, Pat Flynn, the inclusion of the original subscribers in 1837, and a comprehensive index constructed by Maureen Comber.

This hardback publication of 160 pages has a cover design and illustration by Siobhan McCooey from the original engraving by Joseph Goodyear in Lewis' Atlas comprising the counties of Ireland 1837. This new edition is limited to 1,000 copies and will retail at £10.00 per copy.
