Children's Book of the Month Tiger Boots
by Joe O’Brien Joe O’Brien’s Danny Wilde books are a must for all young Gaelic fans. In his latest title Tiger Boots there are problems off the pitch in the Littlestown Crokes camp. Despite huge success with his team on the pitch and securing top positions in the league this season, Mick, the team coach is having a hard time. His job is in jeopardy and his best friend’s daughter has been diagnosed with cancer in Boston and needs an expensive operation. Co-incidentally Clara is also involved in the GAA and captains her football team in Boston. Mick’s son Danny and his friends are quick to help raise money for her operation by working as a team doing whatever they can. Danny who dreams of nothing else but playing for the Dubs and holding the Sam Maguire over his head has to work against a few obstacles along the way. He’s having problems with his girlfriend Trinity, he’s worried about his Da and at times still misses his Mam who died when he was little. But just like on the pitch Danny’s worries are sorted by doing the right thing to get the right result for everyone even if that sometimes means making individual sacrifices. Tiger Boots is an ideal read for reluctant boy readers aged 8 to 12 and will be of special significance to young Gaelic games players. Joe O’ Brien is an award-winning gardener who lives in Ballyfermot, Dublin. His first two books about GAA player Danny Wilde are called Little Croker and Féile Fever. He is also the author of the popular Alfie Green
series for younger readers. |
