Robin’s Winter Song by Suzanne Barton
Published by Bloomsbury, 2015

The illustrations alone in this stunning picture book are enough to make little hands reach for it and turn the pages. Coupled with a very clever but simple story, the beautiful book about Robin’s first winter is destined to become a classic.

Little Robin introduces us to all his woodland friends as they put their plans in place for the arrival of Winter. Robin has never met, and certainly doesn’t like the sound of Winter at all. As it approaches, Squirrel has to bury nuts, the finches must fly South and Bear must find a cosy cave to hide in until Winter is gone. But the turning point in the story comes when Robin realizes that Winter has arrived!

How beautiful! thinks Robin as he encounters frost and snow for the very first time.

He doesn’t know what Spring is like either but if it’s anything like Winter he sings joyfully, he can’t wait to meet it.

Suzanne Barton’s artwork combines collage, drawing and painting and her love of Japaneze-style patterns and prints shines through this and her other delightful picture book for young children, The Dawn Chorus.
