Spirit of the Titanic by Nicola Pierce
Published by The O’Brien Press Ltd., 2011

The 20th of April 1910 is a day that Samuel Joseph Scott will never forget. It was the day he died.
In her first book for children Tallaght-born author Nicola Pierce introduces us to Samuel’s ghost as he recounts in spell-binding detail the lead up and to and the plunging to its death of the greatest ship in the world where he has come to roam after his untimely death two years before it set sail.

In this dramatic haunting story for confident readers Samuel’s ghost introduces us to passengers and crew alike including Frederick Fleet, the young look-out who spotted the iceberg. He was one of the survivors though his guilt, the author tells us, haunted him for the rest of his life.

Spirit of the Titanic is a fictional story based on thoroughly researched events which will have readers rapidly turning the pages to the end of the book.

The beautifully crafted cover designed by Dave Hopkins depicting postcards and signs from the ship along with interior illustrations of simulated tickets, menus and telegrams by Emma Byrne all contribute to the story.

Nicola Pierce will visit branches of Clare County Library during the October Children’s Book Festival when she will share her research and experiences in the writing of this wonderful book with senior classes in the county’s primary schools.
