The School of Fear by Gitty Daneshvari
Published by Atom, 2012.

Madeleine Masterson is deathly afraid of bugs,
Theodore Bartholomew is petrified of dying,
Lulu Punchalower is scared of confined spaces and
Garrison Feldman is terrified of deep water.

Meet the four new students at The School of Fear run by the eccentric “older” beauty queen Mrs Wellington and her able assistant, Schmidty.

When the parents decide to enroll their children in an effort to help them overcome their life-threatening fears, there are surprises in store, and not all of them are pleasant.

There is no homework and there are no exams at The School of Fear. But if they don't conquer their fears by the end of the course, Madeleine, Theodore, Lulu and Garrison will find out just how frightening failing can be, during what might be the scariest summer of their lives. With a creepy groundskeeper, a crazy principal, and an eccentric teacher, the school itself is a whole lot scarier than the childrens’ fears. With only six weeks to get free, along with a servant who's in desperate need of help getting out of there also, will they succeed?

This is Book 1 in a series that will appeal to kids who enjoy a good wacky story full of adventure, fantasy and over-the-top characters. Fans of Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events will also enjoy it.
