The
Book of Clare by Tomas O’Maoldomhnaigh and Daniel
McCarthy
Published
by Cottage Publications, 2003
This
is a beautiful book, an inspired collaboration between artist and
writer. Daniel McCarthy’s poetic prose matches Tomas O’Maoldomhnaigh’s
delicate water colours. The book is an impressionistic trip through
Clare. It touches on people, places and events from pre-history
to the present day.
There
are 32 paintings reproduced in this book depicting buildings, monuments,
streets, houses and landscapes throughout the County, from Merriman’s
Country to Kilkee and from Bunratty Castle to Black Head. Each picture
is accompanied by a short essay giving snippets of information about
the people or customs associated with the area.
There
is a good bibliography for anyone whose interest has been whetted
and who wants to discover more about Clare, its people and places.
This is a lovely book which would make a great gift for anyone from
the Banner County.
