McCarthy's
Bar by Pete McCarthy
Published by Hodder & Stoughton, 2000
Pete
McCarthy was born in England to an English father and an Irish mother.
The summers of his childhood were spent in Cork and this gave him
a sense of affinity with Ireland. In "McCarthy's Bar"
he recounts his travels from Cork to Donegal. His rule of never
passing a pub with the name "McCarthy" on it leads to
some interesting situations!
"McCarthy's
Bar" is a funny, light-hearted book. It is an easy read with
many "laugh-out-loud" moments. It is an affectionate look
at a way of life that is fast disappearing in many parts of rural
Ireland. The author explores his strong sense of belonging in a
country, which is not his native home. An enjoyable and amusing
read. Recommended.
