Reading the Rising for Children

Reading historical fiction is an excellent way for young people to find out about the past. This collection of books specifically chosen for children and teenagers will introduce them to and immerse them in one of one of the most important events to ever happen in our country’s history, the Easter Rising of 1916.

A Clare County Library Children’s Book Promotion featuring The Bisto Children’s Book of the Year Awards 2001 to 2010.

The last decade has seen a host of excellent books suited to young readers from tots to teens receive the Bisto and its sister award the Eilis Dillon Award in Ireland.

The Bisto Book of the Year Award was introduced by Children’s Books Ireland to recognise talent in the field of children’s literature by Irish authors, or authors living in Ireland.

We have compiled this list of books keeping in mind that, boys in their pre or early teens are often uncertain of what books and authors are available.
Some of the titles in this collection are the first parts of trilogies. From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers
This reading promotion is important for young people, particularly for those children who are beginning to read on their own. It is aimed at children who are beginning to read on their own as well as the more confident readers. The stories selected include some classics, a selection of short novels, featuring fewer illustrations and longer sentences for the more confident reader and a range of what are often described as “chapter” books.

Eureka - A Popular Science Book Promotion for Children
Launched on World Book Day, 2005, this is the first non-fiction promotion for children and makes available an excellent selection of information books, including some of the popular Horrible Science series and many Dorling Kindersley books. The children’s books in this promotion have either been shortlisted for or won the Aventis Junior Science Award, one of the world's most prestigious non-fiction literary prizes.

In this promotion Clare County Library presents fifty books with the hope of providing both young and old readers with an insight into the beliefs and ways of life in many different countries.

In May 1998 author Michael Mullen launched this book promotion in De Valera Library, Ennis. This collection features well known Irish writers such as Marita Conlon McKenna, Siobhan Parkinson and Martin Waddell to name but three. Approximately 45 different titles made up the collection which toured all library branches in Clare

1990s Children's Book Award Winners
In keeping with Clare County Library's policy of promoting reading among our young members this promotion was developed as an in-house project. Five major awards feature in this promotion ensuring that children of all ages will find an award winning book to read. With a total of sixty three titles, young readers can choose from books which are as diverse in suitability and content as the delightful picture book, The Baby Who Wouldn't Go To Bed by Helen Cooper or the teenage book, Junk by Melvin Burgess. This book mirrors the reality of teenage life with startling accuracy. Burgess is " a writer of the highest quality with exceptional powers of insight." - The Sunday Times. The awards featured in this promotion are: Bisto Book of the Year Award, Eilis Dillon Award, Carnegie Medal, Kate Greenaway Medal and the Smarties Book Prize.

1990s Children's Book Award Winners


Picture This: A Guide to Choosing Books for Young Children was launched at the deValera Library by Dr. Kyran Kennedy, Director of the Clare Education Centre. A joint venture between Clare County Library and The National Reading Initiative the book is divided into sections such as Growing Up, Child Participation, and Friendship and Sharing. It is ideally suited to parents and teachers who wish to share common childhood experiences through story with young children. The book which is available for sale is a guide to some eighty Picture Books, selected and reviewed by Patricia Fitzgerald. Design and layout is by Jackie Dermody-O'Brien, with Maureen Comber as editor.
