A World Book Day Photography Competition
for Children
De Valera Library, 6th - 31st
March 2003
The Children’s Photography Competition Get
Caught Reading Exhibition organized to coincide with World Book
Day 2003 went on display in de Valera Library, Ennis from the 6th
to the 31st March 2003 and will subsequently tour the other branch
libraries.
There was a huge increase in entries, in this, the
second year of the competition, and judges John Kelly of the Clare
Champion and Gerry Leddin, Clare County Council’s photographer
noticing a marked improvement in the quality of the pictures submitted.
The winners for 2003 are:
1st Prize: And all
because the lady loves a good book by Cliodhna Meehan, 4th class,
Barefield N.S.
Judges’ comments: The picture was chosen for its simplicity.
The photographer included the existing wall mural to draw attention
to the child reading the book. The picture tells a story in itself.
2nd Prize: Getting Caught Reading
on the Ceiling by Aisling Davies, 5th Class Ennistymon Convent of
Mercy.
Judges’ comments: The picture is totally unusual and was the
best of lots of photos with an acrobatic theme. It was one of the
most imaginative entries. It needs to be looked at twice to figure
out what’s going on in the photograph. It looks like the mother
in the picture has really “caught” the child reading.
3rd Prize: Oh Dad! The price of
cattle is very bad in today’s market by Katie McGrath, 6th class
Scoil Realt na Mara, Kilkee.
Judges’ comments: The photograph has an appealing innocence.
It looks like the child has actually been caught reading the newspaper.
It could be taken in any home in the country.
Prizes:
