With the aim of promoting reading during the summer months Clare County Library runs a Summer Reading Scheme for children.

Children aged between 7 and 12 are invited to read a book by 10 or more recommended authors whose names appear on special membership cards available at their local library.

Children who read books by at least 10 authors from the list are presented with certificates in library branches in Autumn for the project which runs from the 1st of July until the 31st of August.

Feedback from participating library branches was very positive. The project attracted a lot of attention in libraries. Staff saw it as an ideal opportunity to attract some new borrowers and encourage others to continue using the library service over the summer holidays. Parents were delighted by the idea as it gave children a goal to start or continue reading over the school holidays. It was also an opportunity for the library to introduce new authors to children.

Presentation of certificates took place in the deValera Library on the 1st of October. The guest of honour was Cyril Lyons, Headmaster of Ruan National School and Manager of the Clare Senior Hurling Team. Children, parents and even grandparents attended the event. A very enjoyable evening was had by everybody with much credit due to Cyril for his enthusiasm for the project.
