The Writers in Libraries Scheme, first established by the Arts Council in 1985, was relaunched in September 2010 to provide funding for imaginative literary programming, with a focus on teenagers, in libraries across the country. The scheme is designed to encourage libraries to partner with local and national literary festivals, resource organisations, and to encourage libraries to use digital and social media. It is co-funded by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the An Chomhairle Leabharlanna/Library Council, and is managed and administered by Poetry Ireland/Éigse Éireann.

On 24th of March 2011 a grant of €2,000 was made available through the re launched Poetry Ireland’s Writers Scheme to Clare County Library on foot of a project proposal to extend the library’s services to teenagers, and in particular, in this case, to early school leavers who are currently students at Clare Youth Service.
From a total of over 25 applications from library authorities in Ireland, ten, including Clare County Library were granted funding.

The amalgam of funding bodies pledged their continuing support for similar projects in 2012.

Proposal submissions were looked at from the following perspectives:
Were they
• well conceived
• deliverable
• practical
• creative but workable
• collaborative, involving a partnership between the library and other service provider/s in the community
• involving a continuous engagement with the artist and the art form

Clare County Library’s submission ticked all of the above boxes and staff were delighted to be one of the authorities to secure funding for the 2011 scheme.
