2. Mary Ann Keane. Mary Ann’s maiden name was also recorded as Cain/Kain/Keain/ Kean/Kein. Her married name was recorded as Leyden on the marriage certificate, but in Australia the surname is recorded as Lydon. She was born in 1856 in Clare, Ireland. She was baptised on 13 May 1856 at Ballyvaughan, Care, the sponsors were John Brown and Peggy Kerin. She married John Joseph Leyden/Lydon, son of Thomas Leyden/Lydon, on 29 Oct 1878 at the Roman Catholic Chapel at Ballyvaughan, Clare, Ireland. Their Marriage was conducted by Father Hanrahan; the witnesses were John Leyden and Bridget O'Loughlin. The following details were recorded on their Marriage Certificate:

Mary and John left Plymouth on 28 Mar 1879 on board the Holmsdale, a three masted wooden ship of 1250 tons, and arrived in South Australia on 27 June 1879. They are recorded on the passenger list as Irish, John age 24, occupation Labourer, Mary age 22 (Surname recorded as Layden on passenger list). 400 emigrants embarked at Plymouth, the Surgeon was Tom Henry Sawtell, seven children under nine died during the voyage, two children were born at sea, and one baby was stillborn. Mary and John travelled widely before settling in Western Australia, four of their children were born in South Australia, one in Victoria and three in New South Wales.
Mary and John were listed on the Electoral Rolls for Western Australia:
In 1901 and 1906 in Kanowna (18 km north east of Kalgorlie-Boulder) John's occupation was listed as a Miner, Mary's as Home Duties
In 1916 and 1925 they were listed at 31 King William St, South Fremantle, John was now listed as a labourer
In 1936 (after John's death) Mary was still listed at King William St.

Mary died of Pneumonia and Cardiac failure on 2 Aug 1942, aged 86, at Woodside Hospital, East Fremantle, Western Australia. She was buried on 3 Aug 1942 at Fremantle Roman Catholic Cemetery, Western Australia, Section MON CC, gravesite 1342, Roman Catholic Priest, Father P.C. John Joseph Leyden/Lydon

John Joseph Leyden/Lydon was born circa 1855 in Ireland (Age of birth calculated from age on marriage certificate). John died on 8 Sep 1926, aged 71, at South Fremantle, Western Australia. He was buried at Fremantle Roman Catholic Cemetery, Western Australia, Section MON CC, gravesite 1342 (WA Death Indexes, Reg No 224, online search, website, and Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, WA, Name Search, website).

A. Mary Ann Lydon was born on 7 Aug 1879 at Paris Creek, South Australia (CD, SA Births 1842-1906, Book 225, page 366). She was baptized on 24 Aug 1879 at Mt Barker, South Australia, the parents abode was recorded as Paris Creek, the sponsors were Patrick Flannigan and Margaret McMahon (Information provided by Judy Smith, email dated 19 Nov 2008).

Mary Ann emigrated to England or Scotland to work as a Nanny or Governess, her brother, Alfred Joseph Lydon, made an unsuccessful attempt to find her when he was in England during WW1 (Information provided by John Lydon by phone 21 Feb 2009 to Judy Smith, email dated 21 Feb 2009). A search of passenger lists for ships from Australia to the United Kingdom was conducted for a possible record of Mary Ann travelling overseas. Although it is not possible to confirm the identity, there is a record of Miss Lydon, age 16, accompanying Mrs Ling, and infant aged two and a half, sailing from Sydney on the Orizaba which arrived in London 5 Jan 1894. Further searches of online databases of English and Scottish records have been conducted for any trace of Mary Ann but these have been unsuccessful.

B. Thomas James Lydon was born on 13 Jan 1881 at Upper Sturt, South Australia, and was baptised at Mt Barker (CD, SA Births 1842-1906, Book 254, page 243 and information provided by Judy Smith, email dated 19 Nov 2008).
Thomas died on 19 Nov 1881, aged eleven months, at Grunthal (now Verdun), South Australia, (surname recorded as Liddon) (CD, SA Deaths Registrations 1842-1915, Book 114, page 404).

C. Michael Lydon was born on 17 Sep 1882 at Mt Barker, South Australia (CD, SA Births, 1842-1906, Book 290, page 432).
Michael was listed on the Electoral Rolls for Western Australia:
In 1916 and 1925 at 31 King William St, South Fremantle, occupation - Blacksmith
In 1936 Michael was listed at Coolgardie, occupation - Blacksmith

D. John William Lydon was born on 29 May 1884 at Scott Creek, South Australia (CD, SA Births 1842-1906, Book 329, page 205). He was baptized on 6 Jul 1884 at Mt Barker, South Australia, the parents abode was recorded as Kanmantoo, the sponsors were James Brennan and Joanna Tyler (Information provided by Judy Smith, email dated 19 Nov 2008).
He married Nellie/Ellen Poole, daughter of Richard E Poole and Muriel E (--?--), in 1911 at Boulder, Western Australia (Registration No 74, WA Online indexes to Births, Deaths and Marriages, website).

John was listed on the Electoral Rolls for Western Australia:
In 1916 at Stock Rd, Hamilton Hill and at 31 King St, South Fremantle, occupation - Lumper (labourer who loads and unloads)
In 1925 and 1936 John and Nellie were listed at Stock Rd, Hamilton Hill, John's occupation - Lumper, Nellie's occupation - Housewife

During his service in France Alfred suffered an accidental wound to his head in Apr 1917 and was admitted to hospital, he was gassed in May 1918 and was subsequently admitted to Alexandra Military Hospital, Cosham, England. Alfred suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand in Oct 1918 which resulted in his hand being fractured; he was admitted to hospital in France and then invalided to the UK on Carisbrooke Castle.
On 24 Oct 1924 Alfred wrote to Base Records and requested that his medals be forwarded to him at Hamilton Hill P.O. Fremantle WA
