8.20 Appendix I: Family Databases: Soldiers 1855-1890

Soldiers 1855-1890

Royal Artillery soldiers were stationed on Scattery Battery (Fort) from 1814 to 1891. Extensive searches in The National Archives only yielded the following information. It appears that the Brigade was mainly reported on as one unit covering a number of Batteries with individual names but without exact locations. WO = War Office.

From about 1860 a Coast Brigade was formed specifically to man the Batteries. WO 17/1123 1861 In January there were 7 men, (5 Episcopalians, 1 Presbyterian &1 RC. In February Lt Ryde was in command he had 30 men (28 E and 2 RC). In March there were only 3 men all (E). In April there were 4 E & 1 RC, WO 10/2820 1861 Scattery is listed under Limerick with only Thomas Drought listed. However Spike Island, Tarbert, Dunaha, Carrig Island, Charles Fort & Duncannon Fort are all listed as served by the 8th Division and 58 soldiers are listed without location.
