Telling Tales: A Clare County Library and Clare Youth Service Joint Storytelling Initiative for Teenagers

Digital Literacy: New Media Focus of the Project

The participants were happy to work with Jackie Dermody O’Brien of Clare County Library who focused on the incorporation of digital media into the programme.
With assistance from Patricia Fitzgerald she filmed the workshop sessions. This served two purposes;
• The participants became accustomed to the camera being present and so were less likely to shy away from it.
• The participants got to use the cameras, developing their skills in terms of teamwork and technological know how.
By the end of the project the participants agreed to have their stories filmed and each participant helped to film one of their fellow participants. Their stories were recorded in order to be posted on Clare County Library’s website linking from a dedicated webpage about the project to YouTube clips of their storytelling performances.
All were enthusiastic to learn how to do this and excited at the prospect of viewing one anothers’ performances.

After an introduction to the media element of the project Jackie continued to work on a one to one basis with all participants showing them how to video and upload their recordings to the Library website.
